I agree with you about the downfall of Windows. It's getting worse and worse. The most annoying thing for me is the "security" - with its aim being limiting freedom of the user as much as possible, without providing any actual security. I like Linux in this manner - you add "sudo" to any command and now you can do it, without need to tweak settings for a lot of time.

Apple is also a great choice, although with its own caveats. I love the quality of their devices, they always feel expensive and reliable.
